Liz Ikamba releases the opening track from the upcoming EP ‘Mama’, which drops in May 2023.
‘Landa’ is the opening track from Liz’s Spring 2023 debut EP ‘Mama’, recorded in collaboration with dynamic London Afro Jazz outfit Matondology. The EP is a tribute to her late parents and a sharing of her personal family-story moving from the Congo to the UK when she was 4 years old, with lyrics written in both English and Lingala.
Chorus translation:
“Landa ngai, landa ngai na mai”
Follow me, follow me to the water
”These songs take particular inspiration from the Congolese folk music I grew up listening to, as well as jazz, pop, soul, hip hop, and other diasporic music styles and traditions. They convey personal and intimate reflections on identity, culture and belonging; love, loss and life-learnings, as well as a celebration of life in all it’s diversity.”
The song Landa came out of my love of water, and my awe at it’s many healing and life-giving properties. It is also an ode to my father’s birthplace in the interior forest of the Congo (which I am yet to visit!) It is a region of lake-networks named ‘Mai Ndombe’ or ‘Black Waters’, and I feel a strong connection and yearning to go there one day.”
