Second track and video release from the debut EP ‘Mama’, fusing classic Hip Hop, Soul and Funk influences.
Ba Yeba is the second single from the upcoming EP ‘Mama’, out on 26th May 2023. It’s about feeling displaced and far from home, and is written in both English and Lingala (DR Congo).
“It’s a message to my younger self, who moved with her family from DR Congo to live in the UK at the age of 4, as well as to wider family members across the globe, reminding them that they are welcome when they are with me.” Liz Ikamba
The Lingala/English lyrics are:
‘Mama na ngai, mwana na ngai, ya ya na ngai, Leki na ngai’ – my mother, child, sibling
‘Ba Yeba, ba yebana’ – they know, may they know
‘Always know you’re welcome here’
In Ba Yeba, Liz uses Soul-infused vocals and Beatbox with heavy, syncopated bass and guitar lines, giving a nod to classic Hip Hop and Funk influences. Ba Yeba was originally written on loop pedal and adapted for the band instrumental recording.
